Michael Applebaum, Director of Product Marketing
Michael Applebaum is Director of Product Marketing for Q1 Labs. His responsibilities include go-to-market strategy, solution positioning and messaging, product planning and packaging, and public and analyst relations. Prior to joining Q1 Labs, Michael was Director of Solution and Product Marketing for the SUSE Linux business at Novell, establishing SUSE as a leader in mission-critical computing while more than tripling revenue. Previously, he held positions with Pegasystems, RetailExchange.com and Parthenon Group. Michael holds a Master in Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from Princeton University.
John Burnham – VP, Corporate Marketing
As vice president of corporate marketing, John Burnham has senior management responsibility at Q1 Labs for all of the company’s strategic branding, positioning, corporate communications, media, and analyst relations initiatives, and for helping to create and deliver the firm’s core messages to the network security management market and beyond. He joined the company in July 2008, and has more than 20 years of extensive technology marketing, branding, and communications experience gained at various established networking firms and start-ups alike, including: Brix Networks, Juniper/Unisphere, Motorola/C-Port, Bay Networks/New Oak Communications, and Cabletron Systems, among others. Burnham earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati.
Iven Connary, Security Information Specialist
As Q1 Labs’ Security Information Specialist, Iven Connary is focused on competitive intelligence. Prior to joining the company Connary was the Chief Software Architect for Tivoli Security Operations Manager. Previously, Connary was a co-founder and CTO of SIEM vendor GuardedNet, which was subsequently acquired by Micromuse/IBM. Earlier, he was a security architect at the Georgia Technology Authority.
Brendan Hannigan – CEO
Brendan Hannigan brings more than 20 years of industry experience to his role as chief executive officer of Q1 Labs, where he is responsible for the company’s overall day-to-day operations. Hannigan joined Q1 Labs in November 2003 as vice president of marketing, and was promoted to executive vice president of marketing and product engineering in March 2004. He was later named COO in April 2006, became president and COO in December 2007, and was promoted to CEO in May 2011.
Prior to Q1 Labs, Hannigan was vice president of marketing and technology at Sockeye Networks. Previously, he was director of network research at Forrester Research, where he oversaw projects covering enterprise networks, security technology, and public network services. Earlier, Hannigan served in a variety of senior-level product development roles at Digital Equipment Corp., Wellfleet Communications, and Motorola. He graduated with honors in Computer Science from University College, Dublin, Ireland.
Heather Howland – Director of Marketing
Heather Howland is Director of Marketing for Q1 Labs. Her responsibilities include marketing strategy, demand generation and solutions positioning and messaging. Previously, Howland was Director of Marketing at Ascendent Systems where she helped evangelize and build demand for enterprise fixed mobile convergence solutions and helped drive the company to its successful acquisition by Research In Motion. As a Senior Manager at Research in Motion she built and oversaw a carrier channel marketing team for the enterprise voice business unit and launched a new enterprise sales enablement team. Previously, she held marketing positions at Nuance Communications, Phonetic Systems, Bay Networks and Hewlett-Packard.
Phil Neray- VP of Marketing
Phil Neray is Security Intelligence Strategist and leads Q1 Labs marketing for the new IBM Security Systems division, bringing more than 25 years of technology experience. Phil joined IBM in 2009 after its acquisition of Guardium, the enterprise database monitoring and security company recognized by Forrester as “a Leader across the board” with “dominance and momentum on its side,” where he was vice-president of security strategy & marketing. Prior to Guardium, Phil was senior director of worldwide strategic marketing for Symantec’s Application & Infrastructure Management business unit, which he joined as a result of its acquisition of ON Technology, a developer of security and configuration management solutions. Phil started his career as a field operations engineer with Schlumberger working on remote oil rigs in South America, and entered the computer industry as a product manager for graphics workstations at Digital Equipment Corporation. He has also worked in diverse fields including parallel vector supercomputing and 3D animation & special effects. Phil has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Honors) degree from McGill University, where he graduated with distinction; is certified in cloud security (CCSK) by the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA); and holds a 2nd-degree brown belt in American Jiu-Jitsu.
Chris Poulin – CSO
Chris Poulin brings a balance of management experience and technical skills encompassing his 25 years in IT, information security, and software development to his role as chief security officer at Q1 Labs. As a key member of the company’s Security Council, Poulin is responsible for the continual evolution of the QRadar family of solutions to keep pace with emerging security threats, customer needs, and industry trends, as well as evangelizing QRadar to strategic partners and customers.
Prior to joining Q1 Labs in July 2009, Poulin spent eight years in the U.S. Air Force managing global intelligence networks and developing software. He left the Department of Defense to leverage his leadership and technical skills to found and build FireTower, Inc., a successful information security consulting practice, with clients that included Cisco Systems, National Geographic, Radio Shack, Symantec, Time-Warner, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and the U.S. House of Representatives.
Tom Turner – Sr. VP, Marketing & Channels
As senior vice president of marketing and channels, Tom Turner is responsible for all product management efforts, demand-generation programs, and channel marketing initiatives at Q1 Labs. He was promoted to his current position in August 2009.
Turner has extensive security industry experience, and has helped build and grow category-defining companies. Prior to joining Q1 Labs as vice president of marketing in May 2005, he served as director of marketing for endpoint security at Cisco Systems, where he helped elevate the company to the number two position in the host-based, IDS/IDP market.
Previously, Turner was vice president of marketing at Okena, Inc., where he and Q1 Labs’ CEO Shaun McConnon pioneered the intrusion prevention market and led the company to its successful acquisition by Cisco. Earlier, Turner managed the marketing and database security product strategy for BrainTree Security Software which was acquired by PentaSafe (now NetIQ).
Turner holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, United Kingdom.
